Off The Record, Syrah 2022

The Shiraz grapes for this wine are sourced, as a small parcel, from a truly unique site. The vineyard is on the Ceres Plateau at an astounding altitude of 1000m above sea level. The vineyard is frequently covered in snow over the winter months.

In order to preserve the purity of the incredible fruit, the wine is 100% whole-bunch fermented before maturing in 4th fill French oak barrels for 10 months.

In the glass the wine has an attractive deep red hue with an alluring bouquet of white pepper, violets and red and black berries with fynbos undertones. On the palate expect an appealingly juicy entrance with dark fruits, white pepper and fine subtle tannin. Delicious in its youth and built to age, should you have the self control to wait.

Description

This is the third vintage of the Off the Record Syrah wine, produced from a small parcel of Shiraz grapes, sourced from a truly unique site. This vineyard, situated on the Ceres Plateau, is planted in fertile Bokkeveld shale soils at an astounding altitude of 1000 meters above sea level. Not many vineyards in South Africa can boast that they are covered in snow over the winter months.

Only 3 960 bottles were produced from the 2022 release.

Syrah Wine Description:

This Off the Record wine has an attractive deep red hue. The nose leads with appealing spicy aromas – white pepper supported by notes of both red and black berries, some violets and a hint of garrigue.

Dark fruits follow through onto the palate with an appealing juicy entrance supported by savoury white pepper notes, a touch of salinity and rounded off with fine subtle tannins. A wonderful example of high altitude Syrah. A wine, whilst still youthful, displays the finesse we expect from cool climate, high altitude wines yet shows enormous maturation potential should you be patient enough to cellar the wine.

Winemaking:

This top-rated wine from Syrah South Africa was 100% whole-bunch fermented in two small batches. Post fermentation the batched had a further 24 days post maceration before being pressed and undergoing maturation in 4th fill, French oak barrels for a period of 9 months. No commercial yeasts, enzymes or fining agents were used in the production of this wine. The wine received a light filtering prior to bottling.

Just a tad short of the brilliance of the 2021 release, but this is still an impressive follow-up from Bobby Wallace. Using grapes from the cool Ceres Plateau, it’s a correspondingly fresh, focused style of Syrah with lots of zip and focus, clove and pepper notes from 100% whole bunches and notes of potpourri and savoury red berries. 2024-29
