Jordan, Outlier Sauvignon Blanc 2024
A distinctively styled, barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc. Unlike typical crisp, unoaked Sauvignon Blancs, “The Outlier” earns its name by utilizing oak ageing to create a rich, dense, and complex profile.
On the nose, a bouquet of sunkissed tropical fruits, fig, guava, and grapefruit, layered with chopped herbs, green bell pepper, and a touch of vanilla whislt the palate is rich, dense, and complex. It balances a ripe tropical fruitiness and fresh grassiness with a chalky mineral texture and vibrant acidity. Long and mouth-filling with a hint of orange peel and a subtle, creamy oak influence that gives it an almost Chardonnay-like finish.

Description
Gary and Kathy Jordan have been making world-class wines since 1993 on a farm with a history going back over 300 years. He’s a geologist, she’s an economist. Gary’s parents, Ted and Sheelagh, bought the now 164-hectare Stellenbosch property in 1982, and embarked on an extensive replanting programme, specializing in classic varieties suited to the different soils and slopes. Unique by Nature’s Design.
An “Outlier” is a scientific term to describe things or phenomena that lie outside the normal experience or an observation that is numerically distinct from the rest of the data.
TASTING NOTES
The barrel-fermented dimension adds additional depth and complexity whilst retaining the linear qualities associated with grapes planted on south-east facing aspects. A dense portrayal of sun-kissed tropical fruits, a true ‘outlier’.
HARVESTING
The grapes were harvested from the 29th of January until the 15th of February 2024 at 22.2°B.
WINEMAKING & MATURATION
The grapes received 4 – 6 hours skin contact before being gently pressed in a “pneumatic” tank press. After inoculation the juice was fermented in 29% French oak barrels; the rest was fermented in second, third and fourth-fill barrels. The wine spent 8 months “sur lie” with occasional “batonage” to accentuate the leesy character. 46% tank-
fermented Sauvignon blanc was added to the blend to give the wine freshness.
LOCATION & CLIMATE
The distinct ravine which embodies Stellenbosch Kloof harnesses all the qualities of a well-orientated compass. Varying elevations and aspects allows us to grow a selection of classic varieties to specific sites that optimise this expression through their location. The cooler south- and east-facing aspects, unique in Stellenbosch, hosts the more sensitive and aromatic white-skinned grape varieties.
Stellenbosch Kloof enjoys a cooler Mediterranean climate with maritime influences from False Bay, 14km to the south, and a refreshing breeze channelled from the West Coast’s Benguela current 24km to the north-west. These two breezes culminate at the top end of the ravine and bring in early morning mists, especially from False Bay. Consequently, temperatures in our meso-climate can be measured at least 3° Celsius cooler than inland Stellenbosch during ripening periods. This adds a unique characteristic to Jordan wines.

“The Outlier uses grapes from a comparatively high block at Jordan, located at 400 metres. Fermented in 21% new French oak, with support from stainless steel and amphora components, this has some subtle gunflint reduction, fine, toasty wood spices, kiwi fruit and lemongrass flavours and a zesty finish. 2025-28”
