Description
Kanonkop Wine Estate is a world-renowned, fourth-generation family-owned winery situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Widely regarded as the South African equivalent of a French “First Growth” or Premier Cru, the estate is globally celebrated as a pioneer of Pinotage, South Africa’s signature red grape variety.
VINTAGE CONDITIONS
The preceding winter had sufficient rain and cold units. Throughout the harvesting period the weather remained favourable, with relatively warm days, no significant heatwaves and cool night temperatures.

- Steak and Grilled Meats: A juicy ribeye, sirloin, or grilled steak complements the wine’s firm tannins and dark fruit depth.
- Roast Beef and Meat Casseroles: Hearty slow-cooked beef dishes, classic beef stews, or traditional Boeuf Bourguignon match the wine's full-bodied character.
- Game and Venison: Slow-cooked venison, braised beef short ribs, or oxtail stand up wonderfully to the rich cassis, cedar, and spice profile.
- Lamb: Rosemary-infused lamb shanks or herb-crusted roasted lamb highlight the savory bay leaf and earthy notes.
- Matured Hard Cheeses: Aged cheddar, gouda, or mature hard cheeses balance the wine's structure and concentrated fruit flavours.

“It’s not as famous as Paul Sauer, but Kanonkop’s Cabernet Sauvignon often runs it close in terms of quality. This is a subtle, deceptively forward red with detailed tannins, mint and fynbos aromas , deftly integrated 50% new wood, bright acidity and flavours of cassis and
summer berries. 2025-35.”

“Old World styling & New World fruit meet in 2020’s tethered opulence, it’s dark-fruited core sheathed in fine tannins that build to properly dry, echoing black cherry finish. As with 2019 well judged 2 years oak, 50% new, ushers in cedar, earth & graphite notes, reinforcing the regal bearing. Released later than siblings, deserves ample time to unfurl.”
