De Toren, Fusion V 2020
‘Fusion V’ indicates the coming together of the five noble Bordeaux varieties; Cabernet Sauvignon led, followed by Malbec, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, respectively.
De Toren have spent years mapping and calibrating the best plots for each variety on their site in Stellenbosch, so that each can reach its full potential.
The result is a delicious wine, with layers of fruit, spice and complexity. It will only get better with age. Decant before serving.

TASTING NOTES
This is a stunning expression of a superb vintage as well as terroir. At first, the richness of the wine is experienced as quite dense blackberry and plum notes with cedar shavings. As the layers open, one gets to experience many depths of dark sour cherry, a spiciness of tobacco, and a hint of aniseed. The acidity is well balanced to extenuate the graphite aftertaste with a full-body, mouth-coating tannin structure while having an appetising sweetness to break the chalkiness.
If stored in optimal conditions, this wine should last up to 20 years plus.
VARIETIES
53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Malbec, 17% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc & 5% Petit Verdot
BARREL MATURATION
This South African wine was aged in a climatized barrel/ maturation room (16 degrees Celsius at 80% humidity) for 12 months in approximately 50% new and 50% second fill, 225 Litre Oak barrels. French Oak is predominantly used during maturation, with a portion of the Malbec receiving the benefit of American Oak.

“Once again, the Fusion V 2020 reveals itself as one of the leading Cape Bordeaux Blends in South Africa featuring 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 13% Malbec, 12% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. The aromatics are bold and spicy with a fairly classically array of perfumed violets, sweet cherry tobacco, cigar box, dried herbs, graphite and sweet cedar wood spice over plush earthy black currant and black plum fruit nuances. In its youth, there are some overt oak notes evident, but they whisper quality and precision all the way, melting away into a cornucopia of textured palate layers with crème de cassis, salty black liquorice, plum spice, and pithy black cherry on the finish. The tannins are supple but tight grained and the acids soft, fresh and harmonious, keeping the luscious black fruit concentration in check. Unashamedly modern and generous, this Stellenbosch beauty from the Polkadraai Hills will drink well on release and cellar beneficially for a decade or more.”
