De Toren, Edition Z 2019
A soft, rich, refined Merlot dominant blend from an industry leader and red wine specialist.
The 2019 vintage of Edition Z was crafted from meticulously grown grapes during a season considered one of the coldest Stellenbosch vintages in recent years. The well defined characteristics familiar to cooler climates are noteworthy and appreciable in this wine.
The blend from this vintage showcases a magnificently aromatic nose. Juicy, ripe red fruit is at the forefront, followed by creamy, mineral notes and even a subtle hint of herbal notes. The fine-drawn aroma of aniseed completes this aromatic experience, perfectly.
The 2019 vintage of Edition Z is linear and precise on the palate, revealing a medium bodied expression with beautifully integrated red and just ripe blackcurrants. The blend’s sensorial experience is perfectly framed by the wine’s vibrant acidity, combined with its well judged oak.
12 months in French and American oak to soften and season the wine. Drink now, or lay down for up to 15 years.
The Z exudes all the finesse and power that makes Bordeaux style wines so coveted and unique.

Description
De Toren Z was created by design born of cool ocean facing vineyards high in clay content conditions intensely suited to the planting of Merlot. Affectionately called ‘Zee’, this approachable ruby-hued beauty takes its name from the cooling Zephyr breeze that air-conditions the ocean-fronting vineyard block of its origin.
A testimony to vines lovingly reared and a uniquely South African rendering of Bordeaux’s famous Right Bank-style red, the wine has garnered plenty of attention, including that of the formidable 2012 judging panel at Mundus Vini, one of the most prestigious international wine competitions in the world – of the 6 000 wines submitted for scrutiny, the De Toren Z 2010 vintage, produced on a mere 22 hectares in the Polkadraai Hills overlooking Stellenbosch, succeeded in clinching coveted Gold.

“”Very exciting: European, cold and with lower sugars in the grapes” is Charles Williams’ verdict on the 2019 vintage. This is his Right Bank Bordeaux style red, dominated by Merlot with 33% Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot and it’s certainly couched in a more elegant style. Floral, bright and refined, with cut grass, rooibos tea and red berry fruit and supple tannins. 2023-27″
