Waterford Estate, Chardonnay Single Vineyard 2022
Planted in 1988, the Chardonnay vineyard at Waterford Estate is one of South Africa’s oldest Chardonnay blocks and the third-oldest certified Chardonnay vineyard in the country.
The 2022 vintage showcases Waterford Estate’s commitment to producing Chardonnay of distinction, with a focus on purity, elegance, and minerality. The vineyard, found on the coolest site on the estate, thrives in granite and red clay soils, lending the wine its signature mineral complexity and refined structure.
The deep-rooted vines draw character from the soil, resulting in a Chardonnay that is fruit-forward, complex and mineral, with a beautifully textured mouthfeel. Aged for 10 months in 300l French oak barrels, with only 24% new oak, the delicate oak flavours serve to give structure to the wine’s perfect balance.
The nose shows a refined minerality, layered with stone fruit, melon, and delicate green olive leaf notes. Subtle citrus blossom and honeysuckle add aromatic lift to the wine. On the palate, the body reveals a flinty, focused character, with white peach and nectarine notes taking centre stage. The oak is integrated and gentle, bringing depth without overshadowing the fruit. A chalky, mineral texture carries through to the finish, underpinned by vibrant acidity that brings balance and length.

VINTAGE REVIEW 2022
The 2022 vintage was drier than what had been experienced in the last three years, and the warmer temperatures also contributed to further drying of the vines. This dryness resulted in significant concentration in the wines, as the grapes lost a considerable amount of moisture due to the heat. Additionally, the higher temperatures promoted ripeness and contributed to the structure that will be evident in the wines.
VINEYARD
Planted in 1988, the Chardonnay vineyard at Waterford Estate is one of South Africa’s oldest Chardonnay blocks, making it the third-oldest certified Chardonnay vineyard in the country. It is the only white varietal planted on the estate and occupies the coolest site on the farm. The red clay and granite soil are very well suited for this vineyard. In 2023, this vineyard was officially recognised as a Heritage Vineyard by the Old Vine Project, marking its 35-year milestone and reinforcing its significance in the evolution of South African Chardonnay.
VINIFICATION
The bunches are hand-harvested and gently whole-bunch pressed in the cellar. This single vineyard requires approximately 8 different pickings to complete the block. The juice is settled overnight. The clear juice is then racked into 300L French oak barrels for fermentation, including malolactic fermentation. After four months, the individual batches are evaluated and blended together before undergoing an additional seven months of ageing.
MATURATION
Fermented and aged in 300L, lightly toasted French oak barrels, 24% new, for 10 months.

“A mid-slope block between 260 and 300 metres, located on clay and granite soils, supplies the raw material here. Fermented and aged in 12% new wood, this is textured, creamy and sweetly oaked, with flavours of citrus, pear and toffee popcorn and supporting acidity. 2025-28”

“Sophisticated 2022 frrom registered single block (as Grenache) is restrained, elegant & supple. Lime cordial-accented fruit has hints of butter & vanilla, satisfying chalky minerality. Ferment 11 months mostly older oak.”
