Vilafonté, Series M 2010

The nose is vibrant with warm flavours. Primary attributes of inviting blue berries, black cherry preserve and cocoa powder fills the glass.

The Series M has a beautiful brightness to it, showing hints of caramel, fruitcake and spice. The wine is singular in approach, with great concentration and a lovely plush mid-palate.

Incredibly smooth and seamless with a long finish.

Drinking well now.

Description

Founded in 1997, Vilafonté was the first American and South African joint wine-making venture within the global wine community. This ground-breaking founding partnership included a well-respected group of quality driven wine specialists from South Africa and the United States.

The 42ha property with its unique ancient soils, called vilafontes, served as the fuse to their winemaking vision. The defining character of the weathered soils formed the foundation for the vineyard, designed by Dr Phil Freese (previous Opus One Head of Wine Growing).

High density planting, which is different by design, encourages smaller vines, lower yields and highly concentrated fruit – a canvass for the artistry to create wines of elegant complexity, structure and longevity.

Vilafonté Series M and Series C are exclusively from grapes grown on this property. Vilafonté strives to encourage a philosophy of patience in the cellaring and enjoyment of their wines.

THE SERIES M BLEND

Consists of 49 % Merlot, 30% Malbec & 21% Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Series M matured for 16 months in 60% new French oak barrels and 12 months in bottle before release in November 2012.

CELLARING ADVICE

Savour for the next 15 years from vintage. Decanting before a meal will provide intensified aromatics.

THE VINTAGE

For the Viticulturist and Winemaker, this was a perfect year. The weather was textbook during set, which lead to a seamless uniform ripening, ultimately, a crucial component for a high quality vintage.

Hot sunny days before harvest resulted in rich and ripe fruit, leading to a beautiful concentration and intensity for this wine.

Complex and layered with plenty of dry aromatic spices on the nose leading into a big palate of dark, savoury fruit, liquorice and menthol hints. Full, bold and very giving.

  2. 90 pts | Wine Enthusiast
Floral notes of crushed violet and iris are partnered with fruity scents of boysenberry, black berry and cherry on the nose of this blend, made from 49% Merlot, 30% Malbec and 21% Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit continues on to the medium-weight palate, alongside spicy accents of pepper and licorice. The texture is full and the tannins mouthcoating yet fleeting on the finish. — Lauren Buzzeo (tasted in 2014)
