The High Road, Classique 2019

(2 reviews)

The High Road is a boutique negociant producer with prominent South African winemaker and viticulturist, Miles Mossop as the Consulting Winemaker. They source their grapes from carefully selected trellised vineyards, from prime spots across Stellenbosch.

A Bordeaux-style red blend of 41% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 8% Petit Verdot, and 6% Malbec. Each cultivar was matured separately in 225 litre French oak barriques (2nd and 3rd fill) for up to 10 months before blending. to ensure balanced fruit, structure and age ability.

The 2019 vintage displays a beautiful deep plum-red colour.  Notes of wild bramble fruit and  ripe prune are evident on the nose, with hints of dried herbs and underlying notes of toasted oak and vanillaThe entry on the palate is smooth and packed with blue and red fruit flavours.  The tannins are finely textured tannins, with a clean finish and lingering notes of dried herbs and pepper spice.  Harmonious and balanced. A true pleasure to drink.

While drinking beautifully now, it has the structure to age well for over 10 years from vintage (through 2032).

Expect notes of juicy plum, with cassis and black fruit. Smooth and supple on the palate, with spice and vanilla on the finish.

“Shift to riper plush style in ample 2018 persists with penetrating 2019. Rounded Merlot (40%) blended with Cab Sav, Cab Franc, Petit Verdot & Malbec supported by lithe tannins from 11 months in old oak & 30 months in bottle.”

“Fantastic value from The High Road, Classique is a graceful, scented, Merlot-based assemblage with 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Polished and refined, it’s like a Stellenbosch take on a Margaux, with cedarwood, graphite and red berry flavours and a herbal twist. 2023-27”
