Talana Hill, Chardonnay 2023
Stellenbosch property Talana Hill was established in 1988 under the stewardship of Vriesenhof’s Jan Boland Coetzee. It was acquired by Doug and Carolyn Smollan in 2021, and 2023 saw the production of their second Chardonnay by Adam Mason working out of the Vriesenhof cellar.
Matured for 12 months, the nose shows ripe citrus aromas with barrel notes of freshly baked shortbread and vanilla pod. The palate has a gentle, creamy texture with brioche-like flavours. Fresh herbal characters provide texture, and the finish is characterized by delicious succulent length.
Under optimal cellaring, this is a wine that will continue to improve in bottle well into the next decade.
Only three barriques were produced, yielding 900 bottles of this wine.

VINIFICATION
Harvested from Chardonnay vines grown on Talana Hill. Early morning, hand-picked grapes were whole-bunch pressed yielding roughly 550 liters clean juice per ton.
Once transferred to tank, the juice received an addition of 3g/hl SO2 and a small dose of settling enzymes. After racking to barrel the juice was inoculated and went through alcoholic fermentation followed by malolactic fermentation before being racked and sulphured. Of the three barrels, one was new, one a second fill and one an older, ‘neutral’ barrel.
The wine matured on fine lees for almost 12 months in barrel before being racked and prepared for bottling in February 2024.
Production: Three barriques were produced, yielding 900 bottles.
