Ali in Wonderfuland, Mourvèdre 2021
This is the third vintage from Ali in Wonderfuland, and the first use of Mourvèdre as the single-varietal. It’s the brainchild and side-project of Ali Verburg, the young assistant winemaker at the family run Luddite winery.
Juicy redcurrants and earth on the nose, leading to bramble fruit, peppery spice and a savoury olive tapenade character to finish.
Intricate balance of sweet and savoury. Delicious and fascinating from a rising star of the industry. Only two barrels of this wine were made. When it’s gone, it’s gone.

Description
‘This is the 3rd vintage of Ali in Wonderfuland Wines. 2021 is a Mourvèdre. I wanted to experiment with wine structure and tannins but still have bright, fresh fruit and length to the wine. This Mourvèdre was in open bin fermenters. I did gentle punch downs twice a day. The wine was pressed into tanks where it went through malolactic fermentation. Aged for 6 months in tank before racking into barrel for a further 3 months and then bottled. Grapes were sourced from: Bot River, Gabrielskloof.
Harvested on the 4th of March 2021
Average analysis of fruit at harvest 23.4 Balling, TA – 5.2g/l, PH – 3.6
Mourvèdre Tasting Notes
Appearance: Vibrant Garnet with bright viola hues.
Nose: Juicy red currents backed by an earthy wildness on the nose.
Palate: Bramble fruit on entry. Peppery spice midpalate. Full mouthfeel backed by olive tapenade to round off wine. Lovely balance of sweet and savoury that lingers.’
