GlenWood, Vigneron’s Selection Chardonnay 2021

GlenWood Estate is in the Robertsvlei Valley, close to Franschoek in the Western Cape. Their wines are multi-award winning and have become synonymous with incredible quality and diligent winemaking.

This Chardonnay had its fruit picked and whole-bunch pressed. The juice was left to settle for two days and transferred to barrel, where it fermented for nine days, before ageing for a further nine months on its lees in French oak.

Straw-yellow in the glass, with vanilla and marmalade on the nose. They carry on to the palate with citrus peel, almonds and butter. Lengthy and refined with steely minerality on the finish.

Glenwood Chardonnay Viticulture:

This Glenwood Chardonnay was grown in a low canopy which allowed optimal sunlight penetration. Minimal irrigation was used. The fruit ripened slowly allowing the development of small bunches with highly concentrated flavours.

Vine age: 11 years.


The white wine grapes were picked at 23.0°B and whole-bunch pressed to 1.4 bars of pressure. The juice was left to settle for two days and racked to barrel. Using 100% wild yeast, fermentation occurred over an 9- day period. The wine spent 9 months on the lees in 30% new French oak and 70% second and third fill barrels.

Winemakers comments:

The Glenwood Chardonnay is a Yellow straw colour. Subdued nose with vanilla and marmelade. Citrus peel and butter on the full palate with a crisp and lingering aftertaste. Lengthy and refined with a steely minerality on the finish. You can drink this Glenwood Wine through 2030.

    Gets less barrel time than Grand Duc & only 33% new oak, but 2021 equally impressive & stellar. Consistent styling sees same preserved lemon & toast notes, candied nut decadence & lingering limy-fresh finish as 2020 (4.5 stars, 94 pts). Wholebunch, wild yeast ferment, 9 months on lees.
