Vergelegen, G.V.B. 2005

(2 reviews)

We are delighted to have got our hands on a limited number of bottles of Vergelegen’s flagship red wine from one of the Cape’s finest vintages since the turn of the century. An incredibly rare find.

Rated 5 stars by Platter’s in its youth and has gone on to develop spectacularly with age. The stunning aged-Bordeaux blend was selected by winemaker André van Rensberg as a favourite vintage to be opened.

Bold dark fruit flavours despite its age. Tertiary signs of ageing showing through notes of tobacco, cigar and mushroom. A truly special wine that will certainly impress.

ORIGINAL TASTING NOTES

On the palate the fruit, tannin and acidity marry perfectly to offer balance and complexity, supported by flavours of redcurrant, dark plum, minerals and chocolate.

They are dry-land vineyards with a planting density of 4000 vines to the hectare on granitic soils with a deep clay/pebble base offering excellent water retention.

The juice was fermented with local yeasts and macerated for three to four weeks. Maturation took place in 100% new 225l Sylvain French oak barrels with at least three rackings over an 18-month period.

  1. 94pts | Jamie Goode

“The flagship red from Vergelegen, this is pretty serious stuff, marrying the ripe, savoury and mineral elements very successfully. Lovely nose of gravel and graphite with spice, blackcurrant and plum. This leads to a palate that, while sweetly fruited, has fresh, mineral personality with a spicy, savoury edge. Grippy finish with good acidity. Real sophistication here, and drinking perfectly now.”

“Still youthful, handsome flagship 2005 clearly cab-led in its plush tones, dominant, fine & dry grip. 20% cab f, merlot input. 2 yrs new Fr oak adds to overall complexity, classy profile. Will reward further 5-8 yrs, as for 2004 (4.5 stars) & pvs.”
