Reyneke, Biodynamic Chenin Blanc 2019
This is a brilliant Chenin Blanc made by Johan Reyneke, Tim Atkin’s 2020 South African Wine Grower of the year, using the 2 oldest blocks on the estate aged 44 and 46 years old.
Textured and aromatic, it shows floral notes with a fresh, vibrant acidity that holds the wine in balance. Layered and complex with mineral tones and a long saline finish.
Made in harmony with nature following biodynamic and organic practices. Perfect with oysters.

WINEMAKER TASTING NOTES
A very aromatic wine, with notes of lemon verbena, orange blossom and white peach notes. The palate is linear, yet layered with a fresh and vibrant acidity. The finish is well rounded, with an almost saline feel on the tongue followed by a lingering finish.
WINEMAKING
The oldest vineyards on the Reyneke farm are two blocks of Chenin blanc, which are registered with the Old Vine Project and are between 44-46 years old, respectively. The vines are farmed and vinified according to biodynamic principles.
The grapes are whole bunch pressed and lightly settled, before natural fermentation occurs in a combination of new and 2nd fill French barrique, as well as 2500L foudrés.
After 10 months of maturation on the gross lees without any sulphur additions, the wine is racked from their vessels, sulphured and readied for bottling early in January.

“The 2019 Chenin Blanc Biodynamic comes from two blocks that comprise the oldest vines on the estate. Matured in foudres and used barrels, like its Sauvignon counterpart, it sports a very subtle reduction on the nose that lends it edginess and complexity. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity. Wonderful mineral tones come through toward the long, fresh, saline finish. This cries out for oysters. A brilliant Chenin Blanc.”

“Part of a superb line up of white wines from Reyneke in 2019, this hails from two old-vine blocks planted in the mid-1970s. Textured, saline and perfumed, with notes of wild flowers and honey, a hint of old wood spice and a textured, salty finish. Effortlessly complex. 2020-25”
