Keet, First Verse 2018

(2 reviews)

Christopher Keet’s iconic ‘First Verse’ is his only release, and has been ever since its maiden vintage in 2009.

The grapes used for this Bordeaux blend are taken from prime locations across Stellenbosch, and then meticulously crafted into a wine that will age gracefully, but that has tremendous vibrancy and character in its youth.

His eponymous winery is run on the philosophy that ‘the art of viticulture lies in the focus, attention to detail and precision nurturing of vine and wine’.

‘The 2018 First Verse is a fine reflection of this exceptional vintage with harmony, elegance and power summing this wine up. Enjoy the wine with poultry, red meat, seared tuna or matured cheese. The 2018 First Verse is a blend of 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot, 14% Malbec and 7% Petit Verdot.’

‘The grapes are sourced from some of the finest vineyards in the Stellenbosch area including the slopes of the Helderberg, Stellenbosch Mountain, Simonsberg and the Polkadraai area. An understanding of this special terroir, meticulous site selection and attention to detail in the vineyards is crucial to ensure that the very best quality grapes are brought into the cellar. Each batch of grapes has been carefully selected for a specific aromatic profile, tannin structure and texture to contribute to the harmonious complexity of the First Verse.

The grapes were fermented on the skins to extract the grape flavours, colour and tannins. Thereafter the wine was matured in the finest French oak barrels for 19 months, blended and bottled.’

‘Master blender Chris Keet uses grapes from eight different Stellenbosch vineyards to produce this consistently outstanding cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and a little Petit Verdot. Textured, fine and perfumed, even at 15% alcohol, it’s more open than the 2017, with fine-boned tannins, tobacco leaf, coffee bean, red berry and blackcurrant flavours and a structured finish. Drink 2023-30.’

A sense of grace about this 5-way Bordeaux blend, cab & cab franc again leading in 2018. Mix of red & black fruit, pencil shavings & subtle spice. 19 months in French oak, just 10% new. Harmonious, the 15% alcohol well integrated, 2.5 years bottle maturation before release making a difference. Fine tannins stretch like silk on the palate.
