Hartenberg Estate, Shiraz 2017

Having planted one of the first single varietal blocks of Shiraz in South Africa in 1968, Hartenberg has long been lauded as one of the country’s premium Shiraz producers.

This wine is the impressive younger brother of Harternberg’s much praised Gravel Hill and Stork Shiraz’s and it certainly holds its own.

A big and bold, yet refined, Shiraz. Black cherry and plum meet a typical white pepper Shiraz spice. Well integrated French oak adds complexity and savoury characteristics.

Initially the nose shows an abundance of black fruits and sweet spice aromas, later opening up to a more savoury, umami character. The palate continues this profile with enchanting, voluptuous biltong flavours and fine, grippy tannins that allow for a lingering spicy finish.

Nestled in a valley on the free-draining, north-eastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, Hartenberg enjoys a Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters.

The vineyards face north, west, and east, with varietals planted to take advantage of either morning or afternoon sun. There is a difference in altitude of some 250 metres between the northern and southern vineyards.

Great pairing with lamb, a delicious homemade beef burger with grilled cheddar topping or mushroom risotto.

“Hartenberg’s estate Shiraz is made with grapes from The Stork and Gravel Hill blocks that didn’t make it into the single-vineyard bottlings, so no wonder it’s so impressive. Big and bold – what Carl Schultz calls a “lurker” – with iodine, cooked meat and spicy oak notes and plenty of grip.”
