Hartenberg Estate, The Eleanor Chardonnay 2019

(2 reviews)

Named after the matriarch of the Finlayson family, who owned Hartenberg between 1948 and 1977. She was said to be strong and resolute in character, yet always sophisticated and poised – much like this Chardonnay.

Citrus, lanolin, hay and tropical fruits on the nose with subtle toasted brioche notes. On the palate, it’s plush and rich on entry, yet shows a fine acidity which balances the wine perfectly.

A restrained elegance and lingering aftertaste completes the wine.

Nestled in a valley on the free-draining, north-eastern slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch, Hartenberg enjoys a Mediterranean climate of warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters.

The vineyards face north, west, and east, with varietals planted to take advantage of either morning or afternoon sun. There is a difference in altitude of some 250 metres between the northern and southern vineyards.

“As always, from best-performing chardonnay parcel. Steely 2017 (93 pts) followed by creamy, rich 2018, showing fruit aplenty yet maintaining noble bearing thanks to mineral element & subtle oak, 50% new, year.”

  2. Tim Atkin | 95pts

“The Eleanor is made with CY95, described by Carl Schultz as the best Dijon clone, planted in a single 0.4-hectare block on the estate in 1997. Leesy, concentrated and powerful, with fine oak, chiselled acidity and notes of honey, baking spices and citrus. Lovely, nuanced Chardonnay. 2020-25”
