DeMorgenzon, DMZ Syrah 2018

“DMZ Syrah always over-delivers at its price point” Tim Atkin

Rich, berry fruit aromas with ripe, red plum, white pepper and some floral notes in the background. Dark fruit flavours on the palate, revealing cinnamon, clove and vanilla spice.

Gentle oak integration, using only 10% new French oak, adds complexity and the ability for a long and graceful bottle maturation.

The palate displays dark fruit flavours, revealing white pepper, cinnamon, clove and vanilla spice.

Gentle oak integration bodes well for a long and graceful bottle maturation of this wine.

These vineyards are situated on the farm DeMorgenzon in the Stellenboschkloof. Soils are mostly weathered granite which gives the resultant wines a natural exuberance and youthful vigour. Planted in 2004 the trellised vineyard is managed to ensure natural high acidity and full flavour concentration. The yield was 8 tons per hectare.

Whilst 2018 was dry in the Cape, the daytime temperatures during the ripening period were cooler than what was experienced in the very hot 2016 and 2017 vintages. The resultant harvest began very early with a focus on bringing fruit into the winery with lower sugar levels and lower pH levels.

Grapes were hand-harvested and destalked into stainless steel fermentation tanks, allowing for a small percentage of whole bunches. Spontaneous fermentation followed, with temperatures ranging between 22°C and 27°C, and the use of gentle punch-downs to extract colour and tannin from the skins. With the completion of malolactic fermentation, the wine was transferred to small French oak barrels, 3000L Fourdres and cement tanks where it matured for 12 months.

“DMZ Syrah always over-delivers at its price point, producing a Cape equivalent of a good Crozes-Hermitage. Lightly wooded in 10% new French oak, this has scented blackberry and blueberry fruit, a twist of liquorice and some whole bunch spice. 2021-24”
