Description

De Toren Z was created by design born of cool ocean facing vineyards high in clay content conditions intensely suited to the planting of Merlot. Affectionately called ‘Zee’, this approachable ruby-hued beauty takes its name from the cooling Zephyr breeze that air-conditions the ocean-fronting vineyard block of its origin, one in which are featured all of the ‘Noble Five’ Bordeaux varietals, with Merlot in dominance.

A testimony to vines lovingly reared and a uniquely South African rendering of Bordeaux’s famous Right Bank-style red, the wine has garnered plenty of attention, including that of the formidable 2012 judging panel at Mundus Vini, one of the most prestigious international wine competitions in the world – of the 6 000 wines submitted for scrutiny, the De Toren Z 2010 vintage, produced on a mere 22 hectares in the Polkadraai Hills overlooking Stellenbosch, succeeded in clinching coveted Gold.

  1. 93pts | Tim Atkin

Charles Williams made some excellent reds in 2016, picking earlier to cope with the vintage conditions. Z, as ever, is Merlot based with the remaining 46% divided between Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon, Malbec and Petit Verdot. Much more than a second wine, this is a different style from Fusion V, with green herb and tobacco notes and wonderful poise and elegance. Signs of a shift in style here. 2021-28

  2. 92pts | Platter’s

Bright plum, spice & cedar on 2016 ‘little brother’. Merlot (54%) leads cab & cab franc, malbec & petit verdot. Muscular but refined, with integrated French oak (30% new). Layered, rich & long. Also in 1.5L & 3L.
