Charla Haasbroek, Cabernet Sauvignon 2017

Lighter than your ‘typical’ Cabernet, this is a more restrained and elegant wine with structure and plenty of character.

Find blackcurrant fruit with some chalky notes on the palate and subtle hints of wax and spice.

Head Winemaker at internationally acclaimed Sijnn Wines of South Africa’s remote Malgas region. Mentored by David Trafford of De Trafford wines.

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is a very characterful wine. This wine is a tad more structured than the previous vintage, but an elegant and fine wine nonetheless.

The fruit was sorted in the vineyards and then crushed into a tank. The fermentation is completely natural. There are between 10-14 days spent on the skins, which is then pressed into 225L French oak barrels, and finally it is left to finish via Malolactic fermentation.

Unfined + unfiltered. Hand bottled.

“13.5% alcohol. 30% whole bunch, wild ferment. Rich, intense blackcurrant and blackberry fruit on the nose with a touch of mint and herb, and some savoury gravelly notes. The palate is fresh, dense and quite tannic with grippy blackcurrant fruit, some chalky notes and a sort of mineral austerity, as well as more subtle notes of wax and spice. It’s a very structured wine with a grippy finish, but it has this intrinsic freshness, too. Distinctive, just as Malgas is.”
