Bacco Estate, Bacco Red Blend 2021

(4 reviews)

Bacco was founded out of a love and appreciation for the elegance and opulence of Italy’s Super Tuscan producers. Their aim is to produce premium quality wines that offer an experiential brand of luxury to lovers of South African wine.

The vineyard is situated next door to Vilafonté, so you can be sure that the terroir is top quality, which really shines through in the wines.

Hand picked and then meticulously hand sorted, at both a bunch and berry level, before a gentle crush and five days of cold soaking to extract colour and flavour. After fermentation, the wine was pressed and transferred to French oak barrels for 20 months of maturation – 95% was 1st fill, with the Malbec component in older oak. After blending and bottling, the wine was aged for another 18 months prior to release.

This intricate blend with its inky red appearance exudes exotic aromas of chocolate, red berries and spice. On the palate rich fruit combine with integrated oak flavours and smooth, dry tannins for incredible mouthfeel and structure.

OUR FLAGSHIP RED BLEND IS MADE FROM SELECTED POCKETS OF OUR FINEST CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MALBEC, MERLOT AND CABERNET FRANC VINEYARDS. IT IS ONLY PRODUCED IN EXCEPTIONAL VINTAGES, AND FOLLOWS AN EXTENSIVE MATURATION PROGRAMME BEFORE RELEASE.

IN THE VINEYARD
Our finest blocks of grapes are designated for this blend and managed by an expert team of precision viticulturists. Our Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon blocks consist of sandy topsoil with red clay subsoils interspersed with quartz and ferricrete deposits. As a result we get great concentration and complexity in the fruit. During the ripening season, green harvesting is performed to ensure a balanced, optimally ripe crop is harvested.

IN THE CELLAR
Quality sorting at the cellar is a rigorous process: first, whole-bunch sorting, followed by destemming and finally berry sorting to ensure that no unripe or spoilt fruit is vinified. The grapes are gently crushed and then allowed to cold soak in the stainless steel tanks for approximately five days to extract colour and flavour before undergoing alcoholic fermentation. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine is drained and the remaining solids are pressed – these fractions are then racked separately into French oak barrels. The 2021 vintage spent 20 months in French oak barrels. 95% of these are new oak, giving the wine magnificent structure, with only the more fruit-driven Malbec fraction of the wine matured in older neutral oak barrels. Once blended the wine was matured for a further 18 months before release.

IN THE BOTTLE
This intricate blend with its inky red appearance exudes exotic aromas of chocolate, red berries and spice. On the palate rich fruit combine with integrated oak flavours and smooth, dry tannins for incredible mouthfeel and structure. Enjoy with Peking duck, dry-aged steak or lamb tagine.

  1. 94 points | Platter’s Wine Guide 2025

“Same label a range, but striking black backdrop signals special status of this superb Cape Bordeaux, Cab Sav in charge, with Merlot & 2 others. Bunch & berry sorted (as all) 22 months in barrel & 2021 doesn’t put a foot wrong. Cassis & cigarbox, herbal hint, and silk texture, plush & streamlined. Lithe muscle tone for ageing, but like the 2020 vintage hard to resist now,”

“Dark ruby. Leather and tea leaf on the rich nose. Palate is full and complex with layers of dark berry, spice, cigar and stewed plum. Layered, complex and made to age. Drink through 2032.”
